About

Naemi Miyazu (b. Lund, Sweden) is the artist behind Naekobo, specialising in wheel-thrown stoneware.

'nae 苗' means 'sprout,' and 'kobo 工房' means 'workshop.' Together, they signify 'a space where ideas and objects come alive—a perpetually growing state.'

Soft shapes and sensorial textures play a central role in Naemi's work. Embracing perceived incompleteness, she scores and roughens surfaces, then smooths and refines them, allowing the unique character of each piece to emerge.

Modularity is another key theme in Naemi's work. Individual pieces are merged into single sculptural forms. Whether combining two or three pieces, each creation appears purely artistic yet can be separated and used/displayed in different ways, depending on the user's creativity.

Having grown up in Sweden in a Japanese-Indian household, Naemi developed a diverse appreciation for aesthetics across cultural contexts. This background has shaped her perception of harmony and attention to the modern and functional aspects of everyday products. The period from 2018 to 2019 was particularly formative as Naemi trained within a ceramic collective in Kyoto, Japan.

With a background in apparel product development and design, Naemi transitioned to ceramics in 2017, seeking a mindful, more sustainable way of life.

She now works and runs courses at her studio in Leyton, London.
